Wownana Vegan Pastry Cafe in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia
What started out as a home business selling banana cakes turned into a full-fledged bakery. Wownana is a vegan bakery located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Specifically, it is within the venue called JioSpace. They offer fresh pastries, breakfast specials, and a decent selection of drinks. On their online store, you may also order whole cakes and pastry sets.
This article is a review of the pastries my friends and I had at Wownana Cafe in PJ.
Vegan Pastry and Desserts at Wownana
Wownana offers both sweet and savoury desserts. Top tip: it’s best to visit in the morning or early afternoon so that they don’t run out. These are the vegan pastries we got to try:
Almond Croissant
There aren’t many easily attainable vegan croissants in Malaysia. Now, you can find them in a few vegan establishments in and around Kuala Lumpur. So suffice to say I got excited seeing the croissant selection at Wownana.
First impression: the almond croissant looked so pretty it felt like Christmas time. Pieces of almond slices decorated the top of the scrumptious looking croissant and dusted with flour that looked like snow.
I’d say the texture was good — crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. What would make it better is if there was a side of vegan butter or jam; but that’s just me.
Pandan Cruffin
This was a seasonal special on the menu. It’s a cruffin (croissant muffin) filled with vegan pandan cream on the inside. The deco on top hinted on what’s more to come as you dig into this absolute banger of a pastry!
Pain au Chocolat
I’m a sucker for pain au choc. The best I’ve tried so far were the ones in London. Unfortunately, the pain au choc at Wownana did not excite me. It looked too big, which potentially meant that there might be only a tiny amount of chocolate. And I was right. The pastry was too wide and the amount of chocolate did not increase in proportion to the overall size. Ideally, you’d want a handheld size pastry with just the right amount of chocolate in the middle.
Cheesy Mushroom Danish
If you prefer something savoury, you may opt for the cheesy mushrom danish (vegan, of course). It was surprisingly delicious!
Overall Thoughts
I’m just so grateful that there is a vegan pastry cafe in town. I loved the light and bright ambience. Overall, the pastries were great and I liked the pandan cruffin the most (I like creamy pastries). I hope that they could improve the pain au choc to be smaller/thinner so that one can enjoy the good mix of chocolate and pastry. More savoury pastries wouldn’t hurt either!
