Must-Try Sizzling Vegan Brownie at Black Cat Cafe in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur
The Black Cat Cafe is a vegetarian restaurant with many vegan options serving a mix of Asian and Western food. They have vegan ice cream, healthy drinks, and a unique range of coffee. This cosy cafe is located in Sentul near the KL Performing Arts Centre, Sentul Depot, and Sentul Barat MRT. It's about 10km south of Batu Caves so once you're done visiting the temple in the morning (which is the best time), you can have lunch at The Black Cat Cafe.
First Impressions
I was a bit confused with the sign at the door saying "Pure Vegetarian".
The description was, “Vegan, Onion & Garlic Free options available”.
I always assumed in Asia that Pure Vegetarian means Vegan i.e. no animal by-products to differentiate from just Vegetarian.
But on the menu, there are dishes with cheese and eggs but you can change to vegan cheese or egg for an additional cost.
Inside, the atmosphere was bright and welcoming. The servers were friendly and accommodating. So that made me forget about the technicality of the word choice on the front door.
Vegan Satay & Kuah Kacang
If I’m not mistaken, the vegan satay was made of monkeyhead mushroom, which can’t really go wrong. I generally love the texture of that mushroom. If you’re not a fan of mushroom, avoid this dish. The kuah kacang could be improved with more of the peanut and flavour. Personally, I prefer this dish at The Link Cafe.
Nasi Goreng Pattaya
On my first ever visit to The Black Cat Cafe, I ordered the Nasi Goreng Pattaya. I was curious about the egg substitute — they used the OnlyEg brand. At this point, I’ve surrendered to the fact that vegan eggs just don’t cut it for me. Overall, this dish was just okay. I wouldn’t order again.
Vegan Bakso
I got to taste my friend’s order. The Vegan Bakso was like a hug from the inside out. This was delicious and comforting. Next time, I’ll order this dish.
Vege Burger with fries
My brother ordered this and it didn’t really look appetizing. It’s just a typical vege burger (homemade patty it seems) with a side of fries. Perhaps it could do with more sauce.
Sizzling Brownie & Ice Cream
This was the star of the show! It’s been a while since I had a delicious plate of sizzling vegan brownie and this was an absolute treat. I highly recommend this!
More to Try!
I have a feeling that The Black Cat Cafe do Asian dishes better than Western ones. But I’ve got to go again (and again) for better judgement. The main thing that prevents me from eating here more often is the distance from where I live. Perhaps there will be a good occasion to visit again.
